Western Macedonia - 8 days / 7 nights

Journey through the National Parks of Macedonia, including the region of Mavrovo, the mountains of Galicica and Pelister, Lakes Ohrid and Prespa and the capital city Skoplje. 1.Day Skoplje - Mavrovo Tetovo - Mottled Mosque - Skoplje (cca 150 km)
Arrive at the capital, Skoplje and transfer to the town of Mavrovo. On the way visit the town of Tetovo (depending on flight). A visit to the Mottled Mosque which is the most beautiful in Macedonia, probably even in the Balkans. It got its names from the multi-colored drawings within its interior. Arrive at the hotel. Traditional dinner.


2. Day Skoplje - Bistra Mountain - Galicnik village (cca 110 km)
Breakfast. A 5-hour tour of Bistra Mountain. Travel by chairlift up to 1600 m followed by a short walk. The tour continues by bus or minivan (those who are afraid to go in the chairlift can also go up by bus). A visit to a traditional shepherds hut. A visit to Galicnik, a village famous for over 25 years for its tradition of the “Galicka Wedding”. Free afternoon with the possibility of renting bicycles and cycling around the lake. Overnight.


3. Day Galicnik - Monastery St. Jovan Bigorski Debar Struga (cca 70 km)
The trip continues along the Radika River to the mystical monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski. Sightseeing at the monastery. Afterwards a visit to the female Monastery of St. Gjorgije, where they make and decorate priest's hats for the Macedonian Church. Continue on to the small town of Debar. Continue on to the town of Struga and accommodation in Hotel or at Hotel out of town. Both hotels have a view over Lake Ohrid. Dinner accompanied by local musicians.


4. Day Struga - Lake Ohrid Ohrid - Struga (cca 30 km)
A boat-trip on Lake Ohrid and arrival at the town of Ohrid. A visit to the small church caves at Rodazdi. A visit to the most important city attractions at Ohrid. This town is under UNESCO protection. Free time in the afternoon. Return to Struga.


5. Day Struga Trpejca village St. Naum Ohrid (cca 60 km)
Morning sightseeing in the town of Struga with a chance to get acquainted with the famous brothers Miladinovi, who wrote T'ga za Jug and the renowned Struga Poetry Nights. This is a poetry festival with a long tradition. Many writers from all over the world attend and read their poetry in their native language on one of the bridges in Struga. An organized lunch in the small fishing village of Trpejca. Afterwards we continue on to St. Naum. A boat-trip to the springs of Beli Drim, one of the most beautiful spots on Lake Ohrid. Accommodation in Hotel in Ohrid. Free time for dinner. (Dinner is not included).


6. Day Ohrid
Free day. Enjoy the beauty of the city. There are many little shops and boutiques, or you can buy beautiful Ohrid pearls which are made by one particular little fish, the plasica. There are also many cafes and restaurants. Dinner with local fish dishes.


7. Day Ohrid Prespa lake Podmocani Kurbinovo Maloviste (cca 230 km)
After breakfast we continue over the mountain of Galicica to new discoveries and further adventures. A little further on and we will view Prespa Lake, another lake 850 m on the other side of Galicica. A short break. We continue by road on the eastern coast of Prespa Lake. A visit to the village of Podmocani. Afterwards we arrive at the picturesque village of Kurbinovo. Free time for lunch. In the afternoon a visit to the village of Maloviste in the Pelister Mountain National Park. Dinner at hotel.


8. Day Pelister Mountain National Park
A morning walk in Pelister Mountain National Park where you can enjoy the scent of the flowers and the singing of the birds. Snack outside and return to the hotel. Free time in the afternoon. Depart for dinner in town accompanied by national dancers.


9. Day Maloviste Bitolj Heraklea Memorial house of Kemal Ataturk - Bitolj (cca 40 km)
Visit to the town of Bitolj and Heraklea, with its ancient excavation from the 4th century. Visit to the memorial house of Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern Turkey. Sightseeing at other historical attractions in the town and free time in Bitolj.


10. Day Bitolj Prilep Strumica (cca 170 km)
Visit to the town of Prilep, centre of both tobacco industry and culture. A short break in the city centre and free time for coffee. Traveling on through Tikves, the Balkans largest wine region, towards Eastern Macedonia. Travel on to the small town of Strumica and accommodation in hotel. Traditional dinner in a small local restaurant in the city centre.


11. Day Strumica Skoplje (cca 150 km)
Depart for the capital, Skoplje. After arrival and accommodation in hotel, free time for lunch. Organised tour of Skoplje. Among many things, we will see the old railway station, a monument to Mother Theresa who was born in Skoplje, the beautiful museum of contemporary art close to the fortress, the old Church of St. Spas.


12. Day Skoplje - St. Pantelemon - Monastery of St. Andreas - Monastery of St. Nikole
Travelling through Western Macedonia we will finish with a visit to a church-monastery from the 12th century, St. Pantelemon kod Nerezija and the Monastery of St. Andreas kod Matke from the 14th century plus a visit to the Monastery of St. Nikole in another part of town.


13. Day Depart for airport and flight home.
