Western-Eastern Macedonia - 15 days / 14 nights

During these fifteen days a cultural tour through Western and Eastern Macedonia we'll show you culture sights of this region and historical attractions. You will enjoy in beautiful landscapes, monasteries, nature, traditional food and music.

Day 1. Skopje - Mavrovo - Tetovo - Mottled Mosque - Skoplje (cca 100 km)
Arrive at the capital, Skoplje and transfer to the town of Mavrovo. On the way visit the town of Tetovo. A visit to the Mottled Mosque which is the most beautiful in Macedonia, probably even in the Balkans. It got its names from the multi-colored drawings within its interior. Arrive at the hotel.


Day 2. Skoplje - Galicnik (cca 110 km)
Breakfast. A 5-hour tour of Bistra Mountain. Travel by chairlift up to 1600 m followed by a short walk. The tour continues by bus or minivan (those who are afraid to go in the chairlift can also go up by bus). A visit to a traditional shepherds hut. A visit to Galicnik, a village famous for over 25 years for its tradition of the “Galicka Wedding”. Free afternoon with the possibility of renting bicycles and cycling around the lake. Overnight.

Day 3. Galicnik - Monastery St. Jovan Bigorski - Monastery of St. Gjorgije - Debar - Struga (cca 70km)
The trip continues along the Radika River to the mystical monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski, which is built of stones known as Bigor-stones. Sightseeing at the monastery, where there is one of the most deeply-carved holy images in the world which was made by two brothers and took 8 to 12 years to complete. Afterwards a visit to the female monastery of St. Gjorgije, where they make and decorate priest's hats for the Macedonian Church. Continue on to the small town of Debar. Debar is famous for the story of Skenderbeg, who was a hero in the battle against the Turkish occupiers. Continue on to the town of Struga and accommodation in hotel. Dinner accompanied by local musicians.

Day 4. Struga - lake of Ohrid - Ohrid - Struga (cca 80 km)
A boat-trip on Lake Ohrid and arrival at the town of Ohrid. A visit to the most important city attractions at Ohrid. This town is under UNESCO protection. This town's museum is a treasury of culture and it is often called “Jerusalem of the Balkans”. Free time in the afternoon. Return to Struga.


Day 5. Struga - Trpejca village - Monastery St.Naum - Struga (cca 60 km)
Morning sightseeing in the town of Struga. An organized lunch in the small fishing village of Trpejca. Afterwards we continue on to St. Naum. A visit to the monastery and a chance to learn about the miracles of St. Naum. A boat-trip to the springs of Beli Drim, one of the most beautiful spots on Lake Ohrid. Accommodation in Hotel. Free time for dinner. (Dinner is not included).

Day 6. Struga - Ohrid (cca 20 km)
Free day. Enjoy the beauty of the city. There are many little shops and boutiques, or you can buy beautiful Ohrid pearls which are made by one particular little fish, the plasica. There are also many cafes and restaurants. Dinner with local fish dishes.


Day 7. Ohrid - Mountain Galicica - Prespa lake - Maloviste village - Pelister Mountain National Park (cca 300 km)
After breakfast we continue over the mountain of Galicica to new discoveries and further adventures. We will climb by bus to the mountain ridge, Livada (the Meadow) at 1568 m above sea level, where there is a beautiful view over Lake Ohrid. A little further on and we will view Prespa Lake. Free time for lunch. In the afternoon a visit to the village of Maloviste in the Pelister Mountain National Park. Dinner at hotel , 1400 m above sea leve.


Day 8. Maloviste - Pelister Mountain National Park - Maloviste (cca 70 km )
A morning walk in Pelister Mountain National Park. Snack outside and return to the hotel. Free time in the afternoon. Depart for dinner in town accompanied by national dancers.


Day 9. Maloviste - Bitolj - Heraklea Bitolj (cca 50 km)
Visit to the town of Bitolj and Heraklea, with its ancient excavation from the 4th century. Visit to the memorial house of Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern Turkey. Sightseeing at other historical attractions in the town and free time in Bitolj. Bitolj is the second largest city in Macedonia with a population of 100,000.


Day 10. Bitolj - Prilep - Tikves - Radovis - Strumica (cca 200 km)
Visit to the town of Prilep, centre of both tobacco industry and culture. A short break in the city centre and free time for coffee. Traveling on through Tikves, the Balkans largest wine region, towards Eastern Macedonia. Visit to the small town of Radovis and its market. Free time to shop at the market. Travel on to the small town of Strumica and accommodation in hotel . Traditional dinner in a small local restaurant in the city centre.


Day 11. Strumica - Monastery at Vadioca - Monastery at Veljusa Strumica
Morning liturgy at one of the three Christian churches in this multi-denominational town (Orthodox, Catholic or Evangelical). Sightseeing at other historical attractions in Strumica and its surroundings. A visit to the monastery at Vadioca and the female monastery at Veljusa. Free time in the afternoon. After an organized dinner, a visit to the gypsy district and its friendly people. In the heart of this district in a small romantic castle we'll enjoy the sounds of beautiful gypsy music.


Day 12. Strumica - Bansko - Village of Mokrievo - Village of Gabrovo - Strumica (cca 50 km)
A visit to villages lying beneath Belasica Mountain in the far south-eastern part of Macedonia. Sightseeing at a Roman Bath in the village of Bansko, a visit to Smolarski vodopad (Smolar Waterfall) Macedonia's biggest waterfall and the springs in the village of Mokrievo. An organized caravan-ride with horses and cab to the village of Gabrovo, sightseeing in the village and a traditional dinner in a local house. Return to Strumica and free time in the evening.

Day 13. Strumica village of Dvorista Berovo (cca 60 km)
After breakfast continue over the mountain of Ograzden towards the region of Malesevsko which is often called “Little Switzerland”. Sightseeing in the village of Dvorista and a short break. Arrive at the town of Berovo and accommodation at hotel . Organized lunch outside with lamb specialties. An afternoon visit to a small church and local museum close to our hotel. Dinner and free time.


Day 14. Berovo - Skoplje (cca 180 km)
Depart for the capital, Skoplje. Short break before Kocana, a small town famous throughout Macedonia for its rice fields. After arrival and accommodation in hotel in Skoplje, free time for lunch and sightseeing in the town. Organized farewell dinner in a restaurant near the city centre with a pleasant atmosphere and sounds of music.


Day 15. Depart for the airport and flight home.
