Village Skills – Wine, Rakija distilling, Chese (8 days / 7 nights)

Spend a week in a traditional village where peasant wisdom and culture are still alive and well! Rob and Tricia MacCurrach, a British couple, will be your hosts in their village farmhouse that has been renovated in the traditional style. Ethnic Hungarian village full of history. Participate in seasonal village activities: Viticulture, wine making and tasting. Distilling rakija (plum brandy etc). Cheese making. Help with harvest of maize. Witness neighbour's traditional bakery worked entirely by hand with local materials. Learn Peak-oil survival skills. Participation is the idea; rediscovering old wisdom is the vision.

 

Day 1. BELGRADE – FRUSKA GORA MOUNTAIN – STARA MORAVICA
Lunch on slopes of Fruška Gora hills. Travel to village of Stara Moravica. Settle in and supper. Dinner. Overnight.

 

Day 2. STARA MORAVICA
Breakfast. Orientation into the Serbian province of Vojvodina and the village of Stara Moravica. Visit local village farm, tour the vineyards, lake, fields and village environs by horse and cart. Out door Kotlić lunch. Return by cart. Free time, supper. Overnight.

 

Day 3. STARA MORAVICA
Breakfast. Visit the vineyards by bike (or foot if preferred) and hear about viticulture. Lunch in the vineyards and return via a “cellar” for tasting, opportunity to buy local award winning wines. Supper at home. Overnight.

 

Day 4. STARA MORAVICA
Breakfast. Spend the day at a neighbour's orchard; discover the Balkan secrets of rakija distilling. Supper at home with local visitors. Overnight.

 

Day 5. STARA MORAVICA
Breakfast. Market day in village; local and seasonal. Minibus to beautiful small Hapsburg city of Subotica; Art Nouveau, town hall, churches, synagogue and art galleries. Guided tour, coffee housing and wandering; home in time for supper before the “folk Dancing club”. Overnight.

 

Day 6. STARA MORAVICA
Breakfast. Spend the morning with a neighbour preparing and bottling fruit (so called zimnica). After lunch a visit by bike to the Cheese Lady from the market to see how it is done. Last supper at the farmhouse. Overnight.

 

Day 7. STARA MORAVICA – PETROVARADIN FORTRESS – NOVI SAD
Breakfast. Visit Novi Sad; city centre, Serbian Orthodox main church, Petrovaradin Fort, Danube quay, Jewish war memorial. Visit small ecclesiastical town of Sremski Karlovci. Go to traditional restaurant with Tamburaši traditional string orchestra. Accommodation in Novi Sad. Overnight.

 

Day 8. NOVI SAD - BELGRADE
Breakfast. Transfer to the airport. The end of the program.
