Tour in Iron Gate National Park (7 days / 6 nights)

newA blend of time and nature on land and water, the largest national park in Serbia, National Park Iron Gate, is located in northeastern Serbia, on the border with Romania. Donji Milanovac, the nearest town to Iron Gate national park is around 220 km from Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. Spanning 63,608 hectares along 100 km of the Danube’s right bank, from Golubac to Karataš near Kladovo, the National Park comprises zones with various protection regimes for natural features, cultural monuments, fauna and relict plant species, which illustrate the development of vegetation series from times immemorial until the present day. National Park Iron Gate is often called the ‘river national park’ because the Danube makes up a significant portion of the Park. The miraculous Iron Gate, the largest and longest river gorge in Europe, is also a natural botanical garden and the biggest European archaeological open-air museum.


Day 1: Belgrade (D) (approx. 20 km)
Arrival in Belgrade by your scheduled flight. Accommodation in 3-star hotel. Free time. In the evening hours dinner in a traditional Serbian restaurant with music. Overnight stay.


Day 2: Belgrade (BL) (approx. 20 km)
After breakfast, we will start our tour with sightseeing of Belgrade. We will visit Knez Mihajlova street, the Kalemegdan park and fortress, St Sava’s Temple – the biggest Orthodox temple on the Balkan Peninsula, the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers, Parliament, Terazije square, Republic Square and more. We will have lunch in the pleasant atmosphere of a restaurant on the shore of the Danube in Zemun. We return to our hotel in the afternoon hours. Free time. Overnight stay.


Day 3: Belgrade – Smederevo Fortress – Viminacium – Silver Lake, transfer by mini van (BD) (approx. 150 km)
After breakfast, we will start our tour along the Danube river. Our first stop will be Smederevo where we will visit the youngest fortress on the Danube. We continue to Viminacium, an archaeological site from the Roman period. Viminacium was one of the most important cities of Upper Moesia, a Roman province, in the military, trading and industrial sense. Here you will visit archaeological ruins and tombs. We continue to the Silver Lake, a resort near Veliko Gradište, where we are accommodated in a newly-built hotel. Silver Lake or Srebrno Jezero is an artificial lake that was created by the redirection of the Danube river. This lake is the main picnic spot of locals. Dinner in a nice restaurant. Overnight stay.


Option excursion: boat ride 45 eur per person (minimum for realization 15 persons)


Day 4: Silver Lake – Golubac Fortress – Lepenski Vir – Donji Milanovac, transfer by mini van (BD) (approx. 80 km)
After breakfast, we continue our journey. The first stop for this day will be Golubac Fortress. Here we will make a photo stop. This was one of the greatest fortresses in the Middle Ages in this region. We continue to Lepenski Vir, a reopened Neolithic site. It consists of one large settlement with around ten satellite villages. The evidence suggests the first human presence in the locality around 7000 BC with the culture reaching its peak between 5300 BC and 4800 BC. Numerous piscine sculptures and peculiar architecture are testimony to a rich social and religious life led by the inhabitants and the high cultural level of these early Europeans. Our next stop is Donji Milanovac, where we are accommodated in private houses. After checking in, we visit the Open Air Gallery that is located on the hill above the Danube. In this village we taste Vlach specialties that are unique to this region. All this is followed by Vlach music. In the evening hours, we return to Donji Milanovac. Overnight stay.


Day 5: Donji Milanovac – National Park Iron Gate (National Park Đardap), transfer till starting point by minivan and walking tour (BD) (approx. 5 km of walking path and 25 by vehicle)
After breakfast, your local guide, who specialize in walking tours in the National Park Iron Gate, will take you on one of the hiking routes. The hiking trails of National Park Iron Gate do not require hiking equipment, the slopes ranging from 5 to 20 percent on these trails are easily negotiated. You just need the desire to replace urban daily life for a few hours with nature, with a camera, some water and good shoes. You will arrive at the first point for this day. First visit will be Valja Prerast (Stone bridge). You will have 2.5 km of walking paths. You will enjoy in deep, beautiful forest of National Park Iron Gate, path is straight with no rise. Short part we will go by vehicle, after you will have walking path of 2.5 km to Beli Izvorac, from where you will have amazing view on Danube River. Late afternoon, return to Donji MIlanovac. Dinner in household. Overnight stay.


Day 6. Donji Milanovac (BD) (approx. 75 km)
On this day you can choose, would you like to go in forest and take another paths for walking through National park (Option I) or you would like to take a boat ride on Danube River (Option II)


Option I:
Walking path – Ploce – Veliki Štrbac – Mali pilaz (25 km in total - vehicle + walking paths, highest pick 768 m, lowest place 75 m): The start of this tour is a great circular road next to the parking lot and the spring where you can be supplied with water. When you climb, the right track, beside which you will encounter marked trees and breaks so you can make with refresher. The effort will pay off quickly because you will be rewarded with the first lookout plates which will introduce you to the Veliki Kazan. Then move on to climb the Veliki Štrbac - through the forest managed by nature, as it should. You will pass by cut-off trees just enough that you can pass. When you hear the wind roaring strong, will miss the excitement when you see a beautiful sight - the Danube in his through and a view that you are lost in the clouds - you've come to the Veliki Strbac (768 m). Since this tour is not time-consuming, you do not need to rush anywhere, feel free to relax, you'll have enough time to drop down and see more small access road. Following you will find out that one part of the road was overgrown, but you need to continue. Following you will see great view, maybe even beautiful because you get the whole picture and you can analyze your path today - everything is seen in plain view. Be careful because of the great abyss below. Late afternoon, return into you apartments. Overnight stay.


Option II: This day will be a perfect day for a boat ride on the Danube. Your boat will pick you up in Donji Milanovac and take you to Tekije. On this ride you will see Trajan’s Plaque, Diocletian’s statue and plenty of beautiful landscapes. At Tekije, your bus awaits you to take you to Donji MIlanovac. Overnight stay.


Day 7: Kladovo – Belgrade (B) (approx. 280 km)
After breakfast, we transfer you to Belgrade for your flight home. Program ends.
