Celebration of Milan’s Edict in Serbia (10 days / 9 nights)

By declaration of Milan’s Edict, in the year of 313. by Emperor Constantine it was made religious equality and stop the persecution of Christians, which lasted 300 years. Emperor Constantine was born in Naissus (ancient Niš), which will be the place where main cellebration will be held. In period between 17.01-28.10.2013., beside Niš, on the teritory of whole Serbia different manifestations will be held, but main event will be held on 06.10.2013. in Niš. On this day catolic church will organize liturgy where we excpect more than 100.000 people.

We suggest that before participation on this main cellebration, you come to Serbia and meet other archeological sites from Roman period, taste local cuisine and return in ancient times. Come and join us!


Day 1. 03.10..2013. Belgrade – Sremska Mitrovica (approx. 80 km)

Arrival in Belgrade. Transfer to Sremska Mitrovica, starting point for this tour. It represent old Roman town Sirmium, today Sremska Mitrovica, one of four Roman capitals. We will visit archeological site and museum. One of the oldest towns in Europe, it was once known as Sirmium, the capital of the Roman Empire. The complex is an archeological site of excavated objects that today is a unique open-air museum. Accommodaton in your hotel. Overnight stay.

Day 2. 04.10.2013. Sremska Mitrovica - Zasavica - Pećinci - Belgrade (B) (approx. 90 km)
After breakfast, continue to Belgrade. First stop will be Zasavica, special Nature Reserve, famous for its numerous and diverse wildlife. It is also famous as one of the centres for the conservation of genetic resources of domestic animals in Serbia. Continue to Pećinci, small town that is well known by its bread museum. Here you will learn about old traditional way of making bread and find out old tools. Continue to Belgrade and arrival in the afternoon hours.
Free time for exploring city by your own. Overnight stay.

Day 3. 05.10.2013. Belgrade (B)
Breakfast at the hotel. Panoramic and walking tour of Belgrade with a local tourist guide. First, we will visit the Republica Square, Knez Mihailova Street, Belgrade's main pedestrian zone, than Terazije, St. Sava Orthodox Church, Parliament and St. Mark's Church and the Royal palace. We will take a walk at the Kalemegdan fortress, primary built by Celts in the third century. Here we will have Belgrade underground tour. A perfect way to discover the hidden secrets of Belgrade is to explore underground. These underground places present older layers of Belgrade that various cultures built over ramparts of the conquered city, a scenario which occurred 38 times. Lunch at the Kalemgdan Fortress, below confluence of nor only two big Rivers - Danube and Sava, but also crossroads of civilizations through history (option). Visit of Saint Sava Temple, the largest Serbian Orthodox church, the largest Orthodox place of worship in the Balkans and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. Free time. We suggest to taste Serbian brandy, called “rakija”, and visit one of our Rakia pubs (option). Return to the hotel. Overnight.

Day 4. 06.10.2013. Belgrade – Niš (B) (approx. 240 km)
After breakfast, departure to Niš, accommodation in a your hotel. We will proceed to the place where will be held main cellebration of Milan’s edict. Here we will spend all day. Free time. Overnight stay.

Day 5. 07.10.2013. Niš (B)
After breakfast, sightseeing tour of most important sights, visit Niš Fortress, a complex and very important cultural and historical monument, an edifice that dominate the urban nucleus of the city. Visit the monument of Šaban Bajramović, worldwide famous Balkan gypsy jazz king. Departure to Mediana, an arheological site from the late Roman period. It was a royal property with luxurious residence and highly organized economy, placed in the suburb of the antique Nis-Naissus. Return to the hotel, ralaxation. Dinner in traditional restaurant with south-serbian specialties (option). Overnight.

Day 6. 08.10.2013. Niš – Knjaževac – Timacum Minus – Zaječar (B) (approx. 100 km)
After breakfast at the hotel, departure to Knjaževac for a degustation of Roman wines. Tour continues to Timacum Minus, which represent Roman habitantion. Fortress and nearby village was dated in 1st century AD, and last up until Justinian's restore of the empire in 6th century. After that we will visit Felix Romuliana, Roman site, the former residence of the Emperor Galerius, who was born and buried on this place. You will have opportunity to find out why this is one of the most important late Roman sites in Europe. Departure to Zaječar. Accommodation at the hotel. Dinner in ethno restaurant – typical „kafana“ in Timok’s region, with authentic atmosphere (option). Overnight at the hotel.

Day 7. 09.10.2013. Zaječar – Negotin – Kladovo (B) (approx. 120 km)
After brekfast, departure to Negotin, where we will visit in its surrounding Rogljevske pimnice, place where best Serbian grape is rised. Here we will visit old wine cellars and have degustation of wine with traditional Vlasch specialties. Continue to Kladovo. Visit to Fetislam, the fortification situated in Kladovo on the bank of Danube. Fortess was built in 1524 by the Ottomans and had strategic importance during the Austro-Turkish conflicts. Than, next on our way is Diana Fortress, which represents the hugest and best preserved Roman Fortification /castrum/ on the Danube. Accommodation in hotel. Overnight stay.

Day 8. 10.10.2013. Kladovo – Tekije – Donji Milanovac (B) (approx. 70 km)
After breakfast, we will go to Tekije, where will be starting point of our boat ride. Boat ride will last approx. 2 hours and you will see the most beautifull part of Iron Gate with Trian Tabula. Tabula Trajana is a memorial plaque erected to mark the end of road construction. After boat ride, arrival in Donji Milanovac, where we will visit to „Open Air Gallery“ on Djerdap Lake. Late lunch in a beautiful enviroment, with magnificant view on the wide Danube gorge (option). Gethering with the naive sculptor, the host who will tell you the story about Vlachs. Here will be our accommodation for this night. Overnight stay.

Day 9. 11.10.2013. Donji Milanovac - Lepenski Vir - Golubac – Viminacium – Belgrade (B) (approx. 220 km)
After breakfast, continuing of the tour along the Danube toward Lepenski vir. It was the centre of one of the most important prehistoric cultures. At the Lepenski Vir site, the remains of religious architecture dating from 6500 to 5500 BC have been found. Depart for Golubac and visit the famous XIV century Golubac fortress. Danube River is 6 km wide on this place, and called „Serbian Sea“. Follows trip toward Viminacium II A.C., a roman town and military camp. Numerious graves were discovered on the necropolis of this ancient town. Departure to Belgrade. Accommodation at the hotel. Overnight stay.

Day 10. 12.10.2013. Belgrade (B) Departure back home.
